The announcement of the 9th edition of the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition – Opera Section 2024 – which is taking place in the Republic of San Marino from 16 to 20 December, has been published and candidates can enrol by 31 October.

This edition of the Competition, as the peak of a number of events promoted by the Fondazione Renata Tebaldi, is particularly significant since it will celebrate the great soprano, who chose to live in San Marino after her withdrawal from the stage, on the twentieth anniversary of her death, along with the one-hundredth anniversary of Puccini’s death and the acknowledgement of the Italian opera singing as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Important news of this edition is the change in the biennial format, which characterised the past competitions. Namely, instead of a double competition (Baroque and Opera sections) every two years, the new formula focuses on alternate repertoires.

In 2024, young artists shall propose performances from Mozart to all the 20th century repertoire. The age limit laid down is 32 years old as of 16 December 2024. Therefore, candidates born between 15 December 1992 and 16 December 2006 can enrol. The Competition is open to opera singers, of all vocal registers, of any nationality. The deadline to enrol is 31 October 2024.

The Competition was conceived in 2005 as a sign of gratitude by the Republic of San Marino towards Renata Tebaldi and as a wish of the artist to promote and support young talents. Throughout the years, the number of singers coming from the five continents has constantly increased and most of them have started a brilliant career. Just think about the winners of the 2022 edition (Mariya Taniguchi, Claire De Monteil, Vasyl Solodkyy, Maria Cristina Bellantuono, Danbi Lee, Yulia Merkudinova and Nicolò Balducci). They have already performed at famous theatres and festivals such as the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Festival Pucciniano in Torre del Lago, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Palau des les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia and the Opéra Royal de Versailles.

The Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition has always focused on the importance of giving the winners professional opportunities by including among cash prizes contracts and auditions offered by top-quality international juries chosen among superintendents and artistic directors. This year the president of the jury will be Ms. Carolin Wielpütz, a renown experienced professional, who is presently in charge of the artistic planning and a member of the managing team of the Musik Theater an der Wien.

The Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition enjoys the institutional patronage of several institutions of the Republic of San Marino:

  • High Patronage of Their Excellencies the Captains Regent
  • Patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Education and Culture and Ministry of Tourism
  • Patronage of the San Marino National Commission for UNESCO
