Announcement of the 10th edition of the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition – Baroque Section 2025

The Fondazione Renata Tebaldi announces the 10th edition of the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition – Baroque Section 2025.

The Competition is taking place in the Republic of San Marino from 23 to 27 September 2025 and it is open to opera singers, of all vocal registers, of any nationality except for the winners of the previous editions (first, second and third prizes).

The age limit is 32 years old. Therefore, candidates born between 28 September 1992 and 23 September 16 December 2007 can enrol.

The enrolment has to be done online at www.fondazionerenatatebaldi.org or sending the requested documents by e-mail to: concorso@fondazionerenatatebaldi.org

To gain access to pre-selections, candidates shall fill in a registration form and include the following material:

  • a scanned document certifying identity and nationality (.jpg or .pdf format)
  • one recent digital photo (.jpg)
  • a short CV (in Italian or English) including details about education, any award obtained in previous competitions and professional activity (in .docx, .doc, .txt, .odt format);
  • the receipt proving the payment of €50.00 (.pdf or .jpg format) as application fee net of any expense, which shall be borne by the candidate;
  • access link to the videos of 2 arias: an “aria di coloratura” and an “aria cantabile” from the Early Music, Baroque or Oratorio repertoire. The recording shall be recent, live and of good technical quality. The 2 arias may be joined and recorded in a single video for a maximum duration of 15 minutes. Videos sent in other ways will not be accepted.

The Baroque Section of the Renata Tebaldi Voice Competition includes the repertoire ranging from XVII to XVIII century. All vocal registers can enrol: Alto, Mezzo-soprano, Soprano, Bass, Baritone, Tenor and Countertenor.

The registration deadline expires on 30 June 2025.

The following pre-selection live sessions have been scheduled:

 The Secretariat of the Competition will inform all the enrolled competitors via e-mail about the results of the pre-selection phase.

Entrants admitted to the qualifier shall confirm their participation in the Competition by 31 July 2025 by sending a receipt for the payment of an entry fee of €100 and the programme they intend to perform at the Competition by filling in the form attached to the communication e-mail.

 

PROGRAMME FOR THE COMPETITION

All admitted candidates shall sing 5 pieces from the voice repertoire of XVII – XVIII century (opera, concert or oratory arias). At least one of them shall be an “aria di coloratura”. The participants are allowed to include one aria as a maximum (out of the 5 chosen) from the classical repertoire. All performances shall be by heart. The use of scores is permitted for oratory pieces.

During the semi-final, harpsichords with diapason at 415Hz and 440Hz will be available.

During the final concert with the ensemble the performance will be with diapason at 415Hz. In case of repertoire with diapason at 440Hz, the accompaniment will be with harpsichord and continuo instruments.

Upon request, admitted candidates shall provide the organizers of the Competition with the scores for orchestra of the pieces chosen and they shall bring themselves all the voice/piano-harpsichord scores or transcriptions of the pieces included in their programme.

The Fondazione Renata Tebaldi will provide all candidates with an accompanying harpsichordist. However, the candidates may, should they so wish, have their own harpsichordist for whom they shall bear any and every expense.

Each candidate shall take compulsory rehearsing with the harpsichordist chosen by the Secretariat of the Competition on 23 September 2025. Such rehearsing will not be compulsory for the candidates accompanied by their own harpsichordist.

Qualifier: 24 September 2025, Teatro Titano (San Marino – RSM)

Each candidate shall perform two arias chosen by the Jury from the candidate’s programme and with harpsichord accompaniment. The Jury may choose to partially listen to the arias chosen.

Semi-final: 25 September 2025, Teatro Titano (San Marino – RSM)

Each candidate shall perform two/three arias chosen by the Jury from those listed in the submitted programme with harpsichord accompaniment. The Jury may choose to partially listen to the arias.

Rehearsal with the orchestra: 26 September 2025, Teatro Titano (San Marino – RSM)

Final Concert: 27 September 2025, Teatro Titano (San Marino – RSM)

Each candidate shall perform an aria chosen by the Jury from those listed in the submitted programme. The concert will be accompanied by an Ensemble conducted by M° Nicola Valentini.

All the stages of the Competition are open to the public.

 

PRIZES

First prize                     € 5,000

plus a contract/agreement offered by the President of the Jury

Second prize               € 3,000

Third prize                   € 1,500

Additional prizes are planned and will be communicated.

All prizes are deemed before taxes according to the local law in force.

 

JURY

The President of the Jury will be Mr. Laurent Brunner, Director of the Opéra Royal and Château de Versailles Spectacles, who will offer a contract/agreement to the First Prize Winner. The Jury avails itself the right not to award the first prize. In any case, the vote of the President will be binding to award the first prize.

In the event a candidate has been a pupil of a member of the Jury in the last three years, such member shall not cast his/her vote and in the final count, the corresponding rating will be the equivalent of the average of the other jurors’ votes.

In the event of a tie of votes, the President of the Jury will have the right to decide. The vote of the Jury will be incontestable and final.

All the phases of the Competition will be audio or video recorded, and the candidates may ask for a copy of the recording of their performance.

Admitted candidates shall be available for any event for the entire period of the Competition.

The Artistic Direction of the Competition will decide the order according to which the candidates admitted will perform. During the Final Concert, the order will be established by the Artistic Direction together with the Jury.

By enrolling in the Competition, the candidates accept to transfer all their image and audio/video rights on the recordings related and limited to the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition to the Fondazione Renata Tebaldi, without giving rise to any claim. The Fondazione Renata Tebaldi will use and disseminate such material related to the Competition through the mass media, including social media, deemed appropriate.

The application form has a legal value and, in the event of any dispute, the binding document will be the announcement in Italian.
